This month sees the harvest of the maize, the last harvest of 2024. The sileage, which is high in energy, is stored for cattle feed throughout the winter. We mix the maize with the lucerne to give the cattle a well-balanced diet stacked with energy and protein.
The winter barley needs to be sown before the end of September, the sowing period of winter barley is significantly shorter than for wheat. The prime time for sowing is the period between the end of September and the beginning of October.

September Is maintenance time here at Intwood Farm. All of the outbuildings are given a full health & safety check. This year the focus is on repairing feed barriers & replacing guttering. The repairs are essential for the start of winter calving, when the Welsh Black, Limosin and Simmental cows and heifers are brought in before their due date so we can keep a close eye on them. It is essential they have shelter, fresh dry bedding and are draft free for winter calving (the Herefords and Highlands, which are the main stay of our butchery production, calve in the Spring).
